CPL Santos was a Psychological Operations Assistant Tactical Team Chief (MOS 37F2P) assigned to B Company, 9th Psychological Operations Battalion, 4th PSYOP Group (Airborne). Jon previously deployed with the 9th PSYOP BN(A) to Haiti during peacekeeping operations.
Jon was affectionately referred to as “The Librarian” by his comrades in the PSYOP community for his habit of maintaining an extensive collection of books while deployed.
While conducting a mission with the 1st Marine Division in Karabilah, Iraq, on 15 OCT 2004, not far from the Syrian border, his tactical PSYOP team’s vehicle was struck with an enemy vehicle-borne explosive device, mortally wounding CPL Santos; he operated the loudspeaker/weapons turret, the TPT team chief SSG Owen, the Iraqi interpreter and severely wounding the PSYOP specialist, the only survivor of the attack.
Jon was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal.
A documentary titled “The Corporal’s Diary – 38 Days in Iraq” is based on the diary entries, photos, and film taken by Jon during his time with 9th BN.
