Sawyer grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and enlisted as an Infantryman completing Basic Training, Airborne, and the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program in 2013.
His first duty station was Joint Base Lewis-McChord at 2nd Ranger Battalion where he served as a Grenadier, Automatic Rifleman, RTO, and Team Leader.
Sawyer PCS’d to Fort Bragg in 2017 and began his career in PSYOP where he was assigned to 8th PSYOP Battalion and served as a Team Leader and S3 NCO.
Sawyer completed a civilian fellowship at the Institute for the Study of War in 2021 as the first Department of Defense attendee ever selected.
He currently pursues college online working towards a Bachelor of Science in Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis.
In 2021 Sawyer volunteered to assist with the Afghanistan evacuation efforts. He led a team that coordinated flights on multiple airframes until the departure of the last aircraft on August 31st when his team switched to developing ground routes. His efforts directly resulted in the evacuation of over 300 American civilians and at-risk Afghans.
Sawyer is happily married with three kids. In his off time he enjoys reading, rucking, and smoking cigars.
He has served twice in Afghanistan 2014 and 2016, Syria 2018, Jordan 2020, Iraq 2021, and Yemen 2022.
